Periodontal Disease- Managing It With The Soft Tissue Management Program

A large percent of adults, in fact as high as 75- 86% suffer from gum disease. Though this disease is on the rise, there are ways to treat the same. At Dr Ehab’s Dental Clinic, we would first conduct a preliminary examination. The inflammation and/or infection is found in the area called the periodontal pocket . At an advanced stage the disease can result in bone loss. The most common symptomns of a Periodontal infection are bad breath, bad smell/taste, bleeding, tender gums, leading to tooth loss. This disease is also believed to have a connection with heart attacks, strokes, diabetic complications and low birth weight in babies.

You would be provided with “Periocheck”:(a prescription mouthrinse that prevents decay, inhibits plaque and desensitizes the teeth) or “Perioguard” ( a bacteriostatic mouthrinse which helps in healing after periodontal treatment)
The Soft Tissue Management (STM) program is basically all about periodontal debridement with a piezo scaler: this process uses a laser like instrument and is thus very fast and absolutely painless. Scaling and root planing is carried out manually and with due care coupled with an in office irrigation treatment with the warmed medicaments: chlorhexidine and fluoride; which are known to help in the healing process.

Our Soft Tissue management treatment program aims to eradicate signs of inflammation, bring down the incidence of pocket depths and detectable plaque to a level which is associated with a healthy mouth. The main idea behind the whole exercise is to arrest the growth of the periodontal disease.

We begin with a very conservative, non-surgical periodontal therapy program, but depending on the type of disease, certain patients need to consult a periodontist for a thorough examination and analysis regarding whether a periodontal surgery is necessary. We believe that participating in the STM program can to a large extent help you avoid periodontal surgery.

Depending on the type of periodontal disease, the STM program might require 2 to 4 visits. All details for each appointment is given at the time of diagnosis and treatment plan. Our expert staff would provide written materials and detailed video presentations to educate patients and give them all necessary information.
